400+ Antique & Vintage Circus Posters & Items
Born in the early 1920's, Fred never knew where life would take him until he looked out his father's Grinnell, Iowa photography studio window when he was a kid and first saw the circus coming into town. From the moment he saw the menagerie of animals, clowns, jugglers, and the parade of wagons that followed the procession, he was hooked. Six decades later, Fred Kingdon's captivation with the circus grew enormously. As a child, and growing up, any time and any place Fred found a circus poster, he would remove it out of the window or rescue it from the trash bin. Over the years, he found himself with this massive collection of posters and other circus related items. Fred put together many scrapbooks consisting of articles and advertising material dating back to the early 1870's. All the posters, programs, and scrapbooks in this auction are from Mr. Kingdon's personal collection. The family mentioned that growing up in Iowa Falls, Iowa, on the open plains during the great depression, The circus was one of the few things that would bring a renewed joy into the small town during a bleak period. Many of the posters were hand rescued by Fred during the 1920’s and 1930’s when he was a child. We are are beyond honored and pleased to bring you this collection, lovingly collected and totally unrestored, just as Fred rescued them, so many years before.
